How to Set up eSIM on iPhone?

Remember the hassle of finding a paperclip to pop open that tiny tray on your phone just to swap SIM cards? Those days are quickly becoming a thing of the past. The successor to the physical SIM card is here, and it's called an eSIM.

An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital version of the traditional SIM card. It’s built directly into your iPhone's hardware, eliminating the need for a physical card altogether. This technology simplifies how you connect to cellular networks, whether you're switching carriers, traveling internationally, or managing multiple phone numbers on a single device.

This guide will explain everything you need to know about using an eSIM on your iPhone. We’ll cover its benefits, how to check if your device is compatible, and provide a step-by-step walkthrough for setup, activation, and troubleshooting.

The Advantages of Using an eSIM on Your iPhone

Switching to an eSIM offers several practical benefits that enhance your mobile experience.

  • Manage Multiple Numbers: An eSIM allows you to store eight or more cellular plans on your iPhone and use two phone numbers at the same time. This is ideal for managing separate personal and business lines or for travelers who need a local number while keeping their primary line active.
  • Effortless Carrier Switching: You no longer need to wait for a physical SIM card to arrive in the mail. With an eSIM, you can sign up for a new plan and activate it digitally within minutes.
  • Cost-Effective Travel: Avoid expensive international roaming charges by purchasing a local eSIM plan when you travel. You can get online as soon as you land without having to search for a local SIM card vendor.
  • Enhanced Security: An eSIM cannot be physically removed and placed in another device if your iPhone is lost or stolen, adding a layer of security to your phone number and accounts.
  • More Space for Innovation: By removing the physical SIM tray, manufacturers have more internal space for other components, like a larger battery or other new features.

Is Your iPhone eSIM-Compatible?

Most modern iPhones support eSIM technology, but it's always best to confirm your device's compatibility. An eSIM is supported on the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and all later models.

To use an eSIM, your iPhone also needs to be connected to a Wi-Fi network during setup. It's important to note that regional variations exist. For example, in mainland China, only specific iPhone models support eSIMs. In Hong Kong and Macao, some iPhones feature two physical nano-SIM card slots instead of eSIM support.

How to Set Up an eSIM on Your iPhone

Activating an eSIM on your iPhone is a straightforward process, and carriers offer several methods to get you connected. Here are the most common ways to set it up.

Method 1: Transfer from Nearby iPhone

Upgrading to a new iPhone? Transferring your eSIM is simple with Apple's eSIM Quick Transfer feature. Both your old and new iPhones will need to be running iOS 18.4 or later.

  1. Make sure the iPhone you want to transfer your eSIM from is nearby, unlocked, and has Bluetooth turned on.
  2. On your new iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM.
  3. A notification should appear on your old iPhone asking if you want to transfer your cellular plan. Tap Transfer From Nearby iPhone.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions on both devices to complete the transfer.
  5. Once the transfer is done, confirm the activation of the cellular plan on your new iPhone.
  6. This method is convenient and eliminates the need for scanning a QR code, making it ideal when switching between iPhones effortlessly.

Method 2: Use a QR Code

Many carriers provide a QR code to activate your eSIM. You might receive this code in an email or on their website after signing up for a plan or purchasing an eSIM.

  1. From Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM
  2. Select Use QR Code
  3. Tap Continue at the bottom of the screen, to activate your eSIM.

Your eSIM may take a few minutes to activate. If you have an iPhone with iOS 17.4 or later, you can also tap and hold the QR code if you receive it in an email or see it in your browser, then tap Add eSIM.

Other Methods: Enter Details Manually

If the QR code isn't working, you can activate your eSIM by manually entering the details provided by your carrier.

  1. Tap Enter Details Manually
  2. Input the SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code provided by your carrier
  3. Tap Next and Continue at the bottom of the screen to activate your eSIM

Once your eSIM is activated, your device will be ready to use with your carrier's network.

Activating and Managing Your eSIM

Once your eSIM is set up, you can manage it directly from your iPhone's settings.

  • Label Your Plans: If you have multiple plans (e.g., "Personal" and "Business"), you can label them in Settings > Cellular. This helps you easily distinguish between them when making calls or sending messages.
  • Choose a Default Line: You can select a default line for voice calls, messages, and data usage. For example, you can use your business line for all outgoing calls while using your personal line for data consumption.
  • Switch Data Plans: When traveling, you can switch to your international eSIM for data while keeping your primary number active for calls and texts. Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data to switch between plans.

Troubleshooting Common eSIM Issues

While setting up an eSIM is usually seamless, you might occasionally run into issues. Here are a few common problems and how to solve them.

  • Activation Fails: Ensure your iPhone is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network. If activation continues to fail, contact your carrier to confirm your plan is ready and that there are no issues on their end.
  • "No Service" Error: Try restarting your iPhone. If the issue persists, go to Settings > Cellular, select your eSIM plan, and check if it's turned on. You can also try toggling Airplane Mode on and off.
  • Cannot Scan QR Code: Make sure the QR code is not expired and that your iPhone's camera is clean. If it still won’t scan, ask your carrier for a new QR code or see if you can enter the details manually.

If problems persist, don't hesitate to contact your carrier's support team. They can troubleshoot network-specific issues and ensure your eSIM is provisioned correctly.

The eSIM represents a significant step forward in mobile technology, offering unparalleled flexibility, security, and convenience. For iPhone users, it simplifies managing multiple numbers, reduces travel-related connectivity costs, and makes switching carriers easier than ever.
